Orthodontics is the branch of Dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and craniofacial irregularities.

Dental health depends on the correct bite or occlusion. Orthodontic treatment is necessary when the occlusion is abnormal or incorrect. This is called malocclusion.

In a correct bite the chewing or mastication forces are evenly distributed throughout the mouth. When you have well aligned teeth, caries is avoided because the teeth can be better brushed, preventing the inflammation of the gums which can result in the loss of teeth due to the loss of bone around them. A correct bite is indispensable to the correction of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems.

There are various conditions that frequently merit orthodontic treatment: crooked teeth, open bite, closed bite, interdental spaces, lack of teeth, high canines, protrusion of front teeth, deviated bite, split palate, harelip, mandibular prognathism, retrusion of the mandibule, among the most common.

All these conditions affect the bite, the pronunciation, and negatively affect a person's self-esteem.

The principal objectives of orthodontics are:

1- Obtain an ideal functional bite.
2- Obtain excellent facial esthetics.
3- Obtain excellent dental aesthetics.
